Utah announces season-ending injury to another player as rotten luck continues
Utah simply cannot catch a break on the injury front. It has been a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad year in Salt Lake City when it comes to player health.
On Tuesday when he met with reporters, Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham announced that running back Chris Curry has suffered a season-ending injury.
Per KSL’s Josh Furlong, the injury happened on Monday.
Curry is the second of Utah’s top four running backs to suffer a season-ending injury, joining Micah Bernard on the pine.
The 5-foot-11 senior from Fort Myers has appeared in three games this season. He had six carries for 23 yards against Weber State, then ran the ball twice for 5 yards against Oregon State.
Curry played in only three games last season as well before suffering a season-ending injury.
After spending three years at LSU to begin his career, the injury puts Curry into a tough spot. He could choose to seek out a medical hardship waiver and play a seventh season of college football in 2024, or he could call it a day.
Curry saw action in nine games during the 2021 season — his first with the Utes. That year, he logged 18 carries for 80 yards.
That leaves the Utes in a bind at tailback. The starter at the position, Ja’Quinden Jackson, did not play during the 21-7 loss to Oregon State and hasn’t looked healthy at any point this season. Still, he’s Utah’s leading rusher with 239 yards on 39 carries. When he was rolling a year ago, he was one of the best running backs in college football.
His status for Saturday against Cal is unclear.
In his absence, Jaylon Glover ran the ball 16 times for 58 yards against the Beavers. Glover has 237 yards and two touchdowns on 64 rushing attempts this season.
Junior Salt Lake City native Charlie Vincent has carried the ball five times this year. Daniel Wood also has four carries.
Utah faces Cal at noon PT on the Pac-12 Network this Saturday.
