Utah added two defensive pieces to its 2024 picture on Friday with transfer portal pledges from former BYU defensive end John Henry Daley and former Georgia Tech defensive back Kenan Johnson.

Johnson spent five seasons in Atlanta with the Yellow Jackets before entering the transfer portal. He came to Salt Lake City for a visit earlier this week and pulled the trigger on a commitment Friday evening. He’ll have one season of eligibility remaining.

Johnson is a 6-foot-1 corner from Minneola, Florida. He played in four games as a true freshman in 2019. In 2020, he made three starts with nine total appearances in 10 games. Over the last three seasons, Johnson has 32 total appearances.

He moved into a full-time starting role this past fall for the first time in his career and produced 29 tackles, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles, and an interception. Johnson has 61 career tackles to his credit and should be able to find a role in the Utah secondary right away.

Daley spent just one season with BYU before jumping into the transfer portal. He was a 3-star recruit in the 2021 class and served a full-time mission before joining the program. He played in three games while making three tackles.

At 6-foot-5, 225 pounds, Daley is much more of a developmental take in the portal. He’ll have all four years of eligibility to work with.

Interestingly, his move to Utah breaks a family tradition of Cougars. His younger brother was also a linebacker at BYU before hitting the transfer portal earlier this month. He’s also the nephew of three former Cougars, including Taysom Hill.
