Utah has earned a transfer commitment from former Ole Miss cornerback Miles Battle. The program announced his signing on Friday.

The Utes recruited Battle during the 2018 cycle, but he ultimately wound up in Oxford. A 4-star wideout, Battle began his career on the offensive side of the football. After two seasons and only four receptions, he made the switch to the defensive side of the ball and settled in as a versatile corner.

He’ll join Sharrieff Shah’s room with just one year of eligibility remaining.

A 6-foot-4, 203-pound corner, Battle produced 38 tackles and half a TFL to go with four pass breakups, an interception, and a forced fumble. Over the last two seasons, Battle has 55 tackles to his name, as well as 14 pass breakups and two interceptions in 25 appearances.

He made one of the signature plays of the Texas Bowl on Wednesday, chasing down a sure Texas Tech touchdown and punching the ball out of the back of the endzone right before Tech crossed the goal line. With the game winding down and Ole Miss trailing by 16, a touchdown would have put the nail in the coffin.

Utah has certainly seen that kind of play from a corner before.

Clark Phillips III is headed to the NFL Draft, opening up a starting spot at corner for Battle to come in and try to win. The Utes could be well-stocked in the secondary if RJ Hubert decides to return and pair with Cole Bishop and Clayton Isbell. JaTravis Broughton and Zemiah Vaughn should be back. Add Sione Vaki to the picture and the Utes will have some interesting pieces to mix and match in the secondary.
