Nate Johnson will enter the transfer portal when the window opens on Dec. 4.

Johnson confirmed that news to ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Dec. 4. The news comes after Utah quarterback Cam Rising announced his plans to return to Utah for the 2024 season earlier this month.

Here is Thamel’s report:

According to Thamel’s report, Johnson is looking to enroll at his next program in January with an eye on winning the starting job. Johnson went 2-1 as Utah’s starting quarterback this season.

This move was expected considering Rising’s decision to return for his final year of eligibility. News of Johnson’s plans to transfer was first reported by KSL’s Josh Newman earlier this week. Here’s what Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said about the matter after Utah’s Week 13 contest:

“We wish him well. We appreciate what he did for our program while he was here,” Whittingham said. “He’s a fine young man and I wish him nothing but the best.”

Johnson will have three years of eligibility at his next destination.
