Kyle Whittingham won't divulge QB plans for Week 7 vs. Cal
Kyle Whittingham and Utah are coming off a Week 6 bye and lost to Oregon State in their most recent game played. As the Utes prepare to face Cal on Saturday, the program continues to juggle a litany of injuries this season.
Most notably, the quarterback position has been a revolving door as Cameron Rising continues to rehab and work his way back from a devastating knee injury. Brandon Rose was injured during training camp, and Nate Johnson and Bryson Barnes have been handling the duties during the 4-1 start for Utah.
On Tuesday, Whittingham shared that he has his QB situation figured out for Saturday’s game, but he will not divulge that plan publicly ahead of time. The head coach noted there is no reason for him to tip his hand unless he is forced to.
Kyle Whittingham says he has his QB situation figured out for this weekend but he’s not going to divulge it, while repeating that unless someone gives him a good reason, there’s no point to tip his hand.

While Whittingham is not publicly tipping his hand, he appeared to indicate what the plan would be a week ago as the team headed to the bye. As of last week, Whittingham had noted Johnson “would be the guy” while the backup situation remains in flux. Players referenced in his comments to fill the backup role would be Rose and Luke Bottari.
As for Barnes, he is expected to be out for now, and Rising’s status remains the biggest question mark. In a Monday piece, Rising’s surgeon discussed the rehab and noted the QB is likely to be out a few more weeks.
