Kyle Whittingham has a plan in place for his quarterbacks to start the season, but in terms of Cam Rising, he’s going to go down to the last minute.

“Cam Rising is right on track with his rehab,” the Utah coach said Friday at Pac-12 Media Day. “Cam will come down to the wire.”

The Utes play host to Florida to open the season on Thursday, Aug. 31.

Because of the strength of the Pac-12 quarterbacks, Rising wasn’t even an honorable mention on the preseason all-conference team even though he led Utah to the last 2 Pac-12 titles. Whittingham said “it’s crazy to me, but that speaks to the level of quarterbacks we have in the league.”

“It is the conference of quarterbacks without a doubt,” he said. “… No disrespect to the guys who are the preseason guys because they are deserving and play exceptional football.”

He added the only other time he can recall that the Pac-12 had so much depth was when Marcus Mariota and Matt Barkley were in the conference.

In other injury news, Wittingham said Utah TE Brant Kuithe would be ready for the season.
