Jonah Elliss earns multiple All-America honors after dominant season for Utah
Jonah Elliss is within range of achieving consensus All-American status.
The standout Utah defensive end was named to the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA) All-America First Team on Monday. The Associated Press selected him as its second-team defensive end. Ellis was also previously named to the Walter Camp First Team.
One more first-team selection will earn him consensus recognition. (The Sporting News and the AFCA are the other two outlets that determine consensus and unanimous honors.)
Elliss was a wrecking ball for opposing offenses this season. He produced 12 sacks and 16 tackles for loss in 10 games. His clip of 1.2 sacks a game was the best of any qualified Power Five defensive player this season, and his 1.6 TFLs per game ranked third in the same group.
This season, the 6-foot-2 end from Moscow, Idaho, produced career-high numbers across the board. He enters the postseason with 37 tackles as well as three pass breakups and a forced fumble. He’s one of 11 qualified FBS defensive linemen with a 90 or better grade as a pass-rusher from Pro Football Focus.
Elliss had his coming out party against UCLA on Sept. 23, when he finished with 10 tackles, five TFLs, and 3.5 sacks. The Bruins were stuck in reverse all day as Elliss played games with whoever tried to block him. His performance earned him the Pac-12 Defensive Line Player of the Week honor as well as the Walter Camp National Player of the Week.
He was a finalist for the Lombardi Award, the Lott IMPACT Trophy, and the Ted Hendricks Award. Elliss was also a semifinalist for the Bednarik Award.
