Saturday’s game between the 13th-ranked Utah Utes and the Arizona State Sun Devils will be the first for ASU since the program decided to part ways with head coach Herm Edwards.

And while the Edwards angle will get all the narrative drum-up prior to kickoff, the game is sneaky interesting for a Utah team that struggled mightily to stop the run in its lone loss this season. Arizona State, conversely, brings one of the best tailbacks in the conference — Xazavian Valladay; 6.9 yards a carry — into Saturday’s matchup and possibly a coaching staff looking to pare down and focus on what the Sun Devils have been good at.

Arizona State’s run game at Utah’s improved-but-by-how-much run defense? Could make for a fist-fight kind of game. Or, the departure of Edwards after three weeks could implode the season, and the first of three straight ranked opponents for ASU takes the Sun Devils to task.

Utah is a 15.5-point favorite at FanDuel, as of publication. That’s a big number.

Bill Connelly’s SP+ model has the Sun Devils covering the spread, but has the Utes winning.

The predictive SP+ is calling for a 32-21 Utah win.

The total at FanDuel is 53.5. Utah is 2-1 against the spread so far this season. The over has also hit in two of the Utes’ three games. On the other side, the under has been the play in all three of Arizona State’s games.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT on ESPN.
