Bryson Barnes was taken to the hospital following Utah’s 21-7 loss to Oregon State Friday night, but he was able to leave the same night and travel home with the team.

The Utes’ quarterback took a nasty hit right to his midsection on a third-and-4 early in the fourth quarter. Oregon State’s Calvin Hart Jr. lowered his head and speared Barnes right in the sternum, drawing a targeting flag. Barnes stayed down and eventually had to leave the game. Head coach Kyle Whittingham told reporters after the game “we’re really concerned about him,” per KSL’s Josh Furlong.

A Utah spokesperson later told KSL’s Josh Newman that Barnes was able to travel home with Utah Friday night.

Barnes opened the year as the starting quarterback for the Utes. He started the first two games against Florida and Baylor before being replaced by Nate Johnson for the next three games.

With Johnson struggling on Friday night against the Beavers, Whittingham turned back to Barnes in the third quarter.

Barnes went 5-for-8 for 40 yards and an interception.

Utah (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12) moves into its bye week next week. The off weekend couldn’t come at a better time for a team that is just being bludgeoned each week by injuries.

Starting quarterback Cameron Rising has yet to play this season. Brandon Rose, who was battling for the QB2 job in camp, was injured and lost for the year. If Barnes is unavailable after the bye week, Utah would have to look to true freshman Mack Howard, true freshman Steve Smedley, or fifth-year senior Luke Bottari as Johnson’s backup. None of them have appeared in a game yet for the Utes.
