USC heads to South Bend looking to snap a five-game losing streak to Notre Dame in the Irish’s house. But this game means more to the Trojans (6-0, 4-0 Pac-12) than your typical Notre Dame clash. USC has dropped in the polls three straight weeks despite continuing to find ways to win football games.

The defense, led by Alex Grinch, has grown into one of the hottest topics in college football and it’ll be the main attraction against the Fighting Irish on Saturday. Can USC put an end to all the negativity or will Notre Dame running back Audric Estimé and the Irish offensive line cause more headaches for Grinch?

Notre Dame (5-2) will be playing its fourth consecutive game against a ranked opponent, and its seventh consecutive game overall. The Irish began the season in Ireland in Week 0 and they won’t go on their bye week until after USC. Over the last three weeks, Notre Dame is 1-2 and looking more sluggish by the game.

Both teams will be fighting for some respect.

Score predictions

ESPN’s FPI gives USC a 38.1% chance to beat the Fighting Irish.

Bill Connelly’s SP+ projects a 30-30 game with a 0.4-point edge to Notre Dame, with the model essentially saying the game is too close to call.

Saturday Out West’s Jon Gold predicted a 37-34 Notre Dame win:

USC is vying to prove it is more than just Caleb Williams, but that reality is dying on the vine. Williams again put his team on his back Saturday as the defense continues to regress, no matter what Lincoln Riley says.

Notre Dame, meanwhile, is looking to rebound from a particularly embarrassing loss to Louisville. Can Sam Hartman and the Fighting Irish back on track?

Saturday Out West’s Derek Peterson picked USC:

This will really hinge on the first three drives of the game. Notre Dame needs a perfect start, I think. Set the stage for a low-possession game where Audric Estimé can feature and Notre Dame can run it down USC’s throat a bit — which it should be able to do. I don’t believe Notre Dame will have the energy to play Caleb Williams straight up. I think we’re about to see an angry USC team.
