USC vs. Arizona: TV info, betting odds, expert predictions
Two of college football’s most entertaining quarterbacks share a field in Tucson on Saturday.
USC’s Caleb Williams has been called one of the best running backs in college football during his first season with the Trojans for his ability to extend plays. Utah’s Kyle Whittingham said this past week that trying to tackle Williams was like trying to bring down an offensive lineman. He’s elusive in the pocket and slippery even when defenses get hands on him.
The second-year man has thrown for 1,971 yards and 19 touchdowns with just one interception.
“His ability to make plays when the plays aren’t originally there is a huge part of their game,” Arizona coach Jedd Fisch said this week. “When he’s on the move he’s extremely dangerous.”
Arizona’s Jayden de Laura — another first-year transfer to his respective program — has been just as electric when operating off-schedule. He’s thrown for 2,274 yards and 10 touchdowns this season.
The difference in their games? De Laura has been much more susceptible to the turnover. He has seven interceptions and leads the Pac-12 in turnover-worthy throws. When Arizona has fallen behind, their dynamic quarterback has pressed.
And with USC’s offense matching up with Arizona’s defense, it’s hard to see where the stops come. With the Trojans, you have the nation’s 11th-ranked offense by both per-play efficiency and per-game scoring. With the Wildcats, you have the nation’s third-worst defense by per-play efficiency and eighth-worst by per-game scoring.
Arizona has been unable to get off the field. USC has had an extra week to prepare.

Expert predictions
ESPN’s FPI gives USC an 88.7% chance of beating Arizona.
Bill Connelly’s SP+ is calling for a 41-24 USC win.
USCFootball.com’s Tom Haire picked the Trojans to win 49-30:
If this one goes by the book, expect USC to begin pulling away around halftime and put the game out of reach by the end of the third quarter. If it doesn’t, that likely means the Trojan defense isn’t coming up with the kind of big plays that have been their hallmark and Arizona’s hanging around. That’s a dangerous game to play in Tucson, where they’ve been known to work some magic against highly ranked opponents over the years.
Wildcat Authority’s Jason Scheer likes the Cats to score, but doesn’t think they can do enough of it to win. He picked USC 49-27:
Arizona will probably keep it close for a quarter and maybe even a half, but the USC offense is just too good and Arizona’s defense has not proven it can stop any decent offense this season.
The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner picked Arizona to cover the double-digit spread:
Both teams had two weeks to prepare, recover from losses in Week Seven and focus on their wobbly defenses. This matchup is about third-down stops, and we view USC’s defense as slightly more likely to get off the field. (Also worth noting: Arizona quarterback Jayden de Laura did not play well against the Trojans in his two games with Washington State.) Look for a back-and-forth affair for three quarters before USC takes control. But that number leaves the back door wide open for the Wildcats to cover in the final minutes.
Our own Jon Gold predicted a close game, but a USC win nonetheless:
USC’s offense is going to be looking to pounce after its 42 points weren’t enough to top Utah. Caleb Williams seems like the kind of kid who’ll really try to rally the troops from an emotional loss to the Utes, the team’s first of the season. USC still has plenty to play for, and I think they’ll come out swinging against the Wildcats.
