USC linebacker says he played against Arizona after popping a rib out of place
USC linebacker Mason Cobb played through a displaced rib Saturday night in the Trojans’ 43-41 triple-overtime win over Arizona.
Cobb, a transfer this offseason from Oklahoma State, made the game-sealing tackle in the third overtime period to end the game and keep Arizona out of the endzone. He told reporters afterward he popped a rib out of place earlier in the game and just played through it.
“My rib came out of place somewhere in the second quarter or third quarter,” Cobb said, per InsideTroy. “That was bothering me, breathing and all of that stuff. But I love the pain of the game, man. That’s what it’s about.”
Cobb said he’s been dealing with that specific issue for weeks now.
“It’s been out for a couple (of) weeks,” he said. “I’ve been practicing through it trying to get it back. It just barely popped out. It was on a hit on the quarterback and I kind of knocked the air out of myself. It’s still healing up. That’s the problem. I’ve got to let it heal up a bit.”
Cobb finished with six tackles in the win, the second-most among USC’s defenders. A team captain, he was on the field for almost the entire game.
Since returning from an injury earlier this year, Cobb has been leaned on heavily. Tracking info from Pro Football Focus has Cobb seeing at least 74 snaps in each of the Trojans’ last three games.
