The Mater Dei (Calif.) prospect was an early commitment to Notre Dame, but when the coaching carousel spun up both Notre Dame and USC and each program found itself welcoming new coaches, Williams de-committed from Notre Dame and later narrowed his choices to USC and UCLA.
“I really like the direction USC is going in right now with Lincoln Riley,” Williams told 247Sports. “A big thing for me is culture and that was one of the things I thought USC was lacking a bit at this time a year ago.
“I wasn’t really looking at them that hard because I just didn’t like the overall fit for me there but things changed once Lincoln Riley came in. I visited the campus a couple of times and had a great home visit with him and (wideout coach Dennis) Simmons and I’m really excited about this opportunity.”
Williams is an elite wideout prospect from the region, and the third Mater Dei star to pledge for the Trojans. USC had previously signed 5-star running back Raleek Brown and 5-star corner Domani Jackson during last month’s Early Signing Period.
A 6-foot-2 wideout with polished route-running skills, Williams was a standout this week to observers of the All-American Bowl practice sessions. He’s rated as the 11th-best wideout in his class and the 76th prospect overall for the 2022 cycle, per the 247 Composite.
Greg Biggins, 247Sports’ national recruiting analyst, offered up LA Chargers star Keenan Allen as a comp for Williams. He wrote this in Williams’ scouting report:
“Smooth pass catcher who can line up at any of the receiver positions. Strong frame with plenty of room to add good weight and strength. Gets off the line well and shows the short area quickness to separate. Not a burner but runs well enough and has improved his long speed over the last year. Advanced route runner, very polished. Smart and understands how to set up a corner, when to settle in to a zone and doesn’t run himself out of being open. Natural pass catcher with good jump ball skills. Does a nice job winning 50-50 balls and catches the ball well through contact.“
Williams is the eighth known commit for the Trojans in the 2022 cycle. They also have three transfer commitments. You can view his highlight tape below, via Hudl:
