USC inches closer to the top four in latest College Football Playoff ranking
USC is the Pac-12’s best remaining hope to make the College Football Playoff, and the Trojans sit at No. 7 in the rankings with two regular-season games still to play.
The top four of this week’s CFP rankings remained unchanged after the four remaining unbeatens all won their games over the weekend. Georgia is No. 1, Ohio State No. 2, Michigan No. 3, and TCU No. 4.
With Oregon’s loss to Washington at home last Saturday, the Ducks plummeted in the CFP rankings. As did UCLA, which lost to Arizona at home. The Ducks’ loss opened the door for the Trojans, who rose one spot from last week.
Also of note for USC: Oregon State moved back into the rankings after beating Cal 38-10. The Beavers sit at 7-3 on the season. USC beat the Beavers 17-14 in Corvallis on Sept. 24.

USC blasted Colorado last Friday, 55-17. It broke the 40-point threshold for the fourth consecutive game in the win, the first time that’s happened in a single season at USC since 2003. With 55 points, USC brought its season total to 424 in 10 games. Not counting the vacated 2005 season, the 424 points are the most through the first 10 games for a Trojan team in program history.
On the heels of a 4-8 campaign, USC (9-1, 7-1 Pac-12) sits atop the Pac-12 with one conference game left to play. A win this weekend will secure the Trojans a spot in the Pac-12 title game in Las Vegas.
It’ll travel to Pasadena on Saturday (5 p.m. PT, FOX) to battle UCLA. The Bruins won last year’s meeting 62-33 at the Coliseum, but that was a vastly different USC team.
And USC will have the chance over these final two games to prove it in front of as many eyeballs as possible. Should USC win out, it would close the regular season with three straight wins over ranked opponents — UCLA this weekend, Notre Dame next, and then the title game opponent. USC’s Nov. 26 game against the Fighting Irish is set to be broadcast on ABC (4:30 p.m. PT). The Pac-12 Championship Game takes place on Friday, Dec. 2 at 5 p.m. PT on FOX.
