USC drops in latest AP Top 25 poll after near-meltdown at Colorado
USC is ranked No. 9 in the latest AP Top 25, released Sunday.
The Trojans dropped 1 spot in the poll after narrowly avoiding an upset on the road at Colorado over the weekend, marking the second consecutive week USC has fallen in the ranking despite a win.
USC is 5-0 on the season, bolstered by a fantastic start from quarterback Caleb Williams. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner has 21 touchdowns against just one interception now after a six-touchdown day against the Buffaloes.
But USC was unimpressive on the other side of the football, allowing Colorado to rally from a 48-21 third-quarter deficit and make it a seven-point game when the clock hit all zeroes. The display — 41 points allowed, 564 yards allowed — prompted intense criticism of defensive coordinator Alex Grinch.
Others voiced concerns about Lincoln Riley’s steadfast commitment to Grinch, and Riley was asked in the postgame press conference whether he still trusted the coordinator — something that clearly irked him.
The Trojans will host Arizona on Oct. 7 in a game that now becomes pretty important from a perception standpoint. After that, they head to South Bend to battle a Notre Dame team that is 5-1.
USC is joined in this week’s poll by No. 7 Washington, No. 8 Oregon, No. 13 Washington State, No. 15 Oregon State, and No. 19 Utah.
