USC tried as hard as it could to replicate the absolutely disastrous finish that Mario Cristobal engineered at Miami on Saturday night.

First it was MarShawn Lloyd running out of bounds to stop the clock with 24 seconds on the clock and allow Arizona to preserve its timeouts. Then it was Caleb Williams firing a pass to an unsuspecting Brenden Rice on first-and-goal from the 6.

Then it was Williams fumbling a handoff exchange on second-and-goal. Then it was nearly letting the clock expire trying to get set to spike the ball when USC had a timeout in its pocket.

And after all that, instead of kicking a game-winning field goal to beat the unranked Wildcats, USC botched the play and sent the game to overtime.

The snap was high. The hold was poor. USC kicker Dennis Lynch had to adjust. There was no chance for the kick.

And that play came after Arizona missed a 50-yard field goal with 2:08 to play that would have given the Wildcats a three-point lead.
