USC adds another big name to non-conference 2023-24 schedule, per report
USC will face Gonzaga in a non-conference neutral site clash next season, according to multiple reports. Stadium’s Jeff Goodman was first to report the news on Thursday night.
The Trojans and Bulldogs will meet on Saturday, Dec. 2, in Las Vegas. The arena is yet to be determined, but Goodman reported it would either be at MGM Grand Garden or Mandalay Bay.
Of course, Sin City will also play host to the Pac-12 Championship Game on the gridiron that weekend. With Lincoln Riley’s squad looking like a title contender once again this upcoming season, it could become a showcase weekend of sorts for USC’s athletic department.
The matchup between USC and Gonzaga will be the first between the two programs since they met in the Elite Eight of the 2021 NCAA Tournament. The Zags stormed out of the gates and took control of that one early, cruising to an 85-66 win.
Gonzaga went 31-6 last season and advanced to the Elite Eight. The tourney run came to an abrupt end there, as Gonzaga ran into eventual champion UConn and got the wheels blown off, 82-54.
Mark Few should once again have a strong group that can contend for the WCC title. Drew Timme departs, but Gonzaga loaded up in the transfer portal with Ryan Nembhard (Creighton), Steele Venters (Eastern Washington), and Graham Ike (Wyoming). Nolan Hickman (7.7 points) and Anton Watson (11.1 points) return as well.
USC brings back Boogie Ellis and Vince Iwuchukwu from last year’s squad but, like the Zags, the talk of the offseason has been about who the Trojans were able to add. The 2023 signing class brings the No. 1 overall recruit in the cycle, Isaiah Collier, to Los Angeles as well as 5-star combo guard Bronny James. USC also added former Washington State forward DJ Rodman.
It’ll be the second game in Vegas for USC during the non-conference portion of its 2023-24 slate. The Trojans are also opening the season against Kansas State at T-Mobile Arena.
