Lincoln Riley is typically the one giving health updates and addressing absences. This time, it’s the USC head coach who is missing practice.

The Trojans announced Tuesday that Riley missed his second consecutive practice due to illness. Kliff Kingsbury filled Riley’s spot as an on-field instructor in practice.

Not many programs have an experienced head coach available to step in for these situations. Kingsbury was a head coach the previous 10 seasons with the Texas Tech Red Raiders (2013-18) and NFL’s Arizona Cardinals (2019-22). He joined Riley’s staff as a senior offensive analyst in April 2023.

The Trojans are currently on a 2-game losing skid. Riley has faced heavy criticism after USC’s back-to-back losses to Notre Dame and Utah.

USC is looking to get back on track in Week 9 against in-state rival Cal. Kickoff from Berkeley is set for 1 p.m. PT. We’ll see if Riley is on the sidelines for the game.
