Lincoln Riley has as many losses against ranked opponents through his first two seasons at USC as he did in five years at Oklahoma.

Saturday’s 52-42 loss to No. 5 Washington at home dropped the Trojans to 7-3 on the season and put USC’s Pac-12 title hopes on life support. USC will have to beat Oregon in Eugene next Saturday to remain alive in the title chase, and the Ducks just beat Cal 63-19 at home in the rain.

The loss to UW also dropped Riley to 2-6 in his USC tenure against teams ranked inside the AP Top 25. USC is 0-3 against ranked teams this season.

In five years and 65 games at Oklahoma, Riley was 15-6 against ranked opponents.

Of course, context matters here. Riley inherited an Oklahoma team that was humming when legendary coach Bob Stoops decided to step down ahead of the 2017 season. Before Riley took over, Stoops had led OU to double-digit win seasons all but three years from 2000-16.

The team Riley took over at USC was far from that standard. The Trojans were 4-8 the year before Riley came to Los Angeles. They’d gone 8-5 and 5-7 in the two prior full seasons.

But Riley’s pedigree as a big game-winner — particularly in the month of November — is what drew USC to him in the first place. Riley was brought to the West Coast to win games like the one it lost at home on Saturday and like the one it lost at home to Utah in Week 8.

Now, No. 6 Oregon awaits.
