Lincoln Riley’s new-look defensive staff is complete with USC confirming a new defensive line coach and co-defensive coordinator on Monday.

The new piece to Riley’s staff is Eric Henderson, a key assistant for the Los Angeles Rams. Henderson has been a part of Sean McVay’s staff since 2019, and he will also have the role of run game coordinator for the Trojans.

“I’m excited to welcome the final member of our defensive staff, Eric Henderson,” said Riley via press release. “A Super Bowl Champion coach who has been recognized nationally for being the top in his field, Eric will bring immeasurable knowledge and experience to our program. We have put together a defensive staff that is second to none. We’re ready to get to work.”

During the 2023 season, the Rams produced the No. 8 run defense per PFF while finishing the regular season with 41 sacks. Four players produced 6+ sacks during the season, a first occurrence for the Rams since the 1985 season.

Henderson has been praised for his work with star DL Aaron Donald and rookie Kobie Turner, a player regarded as one of the top rookie pass rushers in the NFL. During the 2022 season, the Rams allowed just two players to reach 100+ yards rushing.

Prior to his stint with the Rams, Henderson spent two seasons with the Los Angeles Chargers as an assistant DL coach. He also has stints at the collegiate level at UTSA, Oklahoma State and Georgia Military College.

Henderson joins USC’s revamped defensive staff that will be led by DC D’Anton Lynn and includes linebackers coach Matt Entz. We’ll see how all the pieces play out for USC, but the defense appears to be in good hands as the Trojans prepare for the Big Ten.
