Kyle Whittingham gets the unenviable task of something no other team in the country will be charged with this season: trying to find a way to slow Caleb Williams twice.

Despite a win over the Trojans on Oct. 15 — Utah is the only team to do that all season — Williams went off. The second-year quarterback had 381 passing yards, 57 rushing yards, and five touchdowns.

Part of the calculus when Utah went for a game-winning two-point conversion with less than a minute left was that Whittingham felt they had a better shot of winning the game there at the end than they would have had things gone to overtime. USC couldn’t stop Utah that day, and the same can be said going the other way.

The two sides will match up again on Friday for the Pac-12 championship. At his weekly press conference, Whittingham offered effusive praise of the Trojan star.

“Show me a game where he’s not great,” the 18-year head coach told reporters. “I think he just keeps getting better and better. He’s maybe the most difficult quarterback to sack we’ve ever come across that is also a great throwing threat. We’ve played some really athletic quarterbacks that you might liken to a wide receiver playing QB, but nobody harder to sack than that guy. He keeps plays alive, he extends plays, he keeps his eyes downfield incredibly well during the scrambles.

“He very rarely glances at the rush, he’s always seeing peripherally and it seems like he has eyes in the back of his head. Some of the escapes he has are just fantastic. And he’s only 20 years old, second year out of high school — a true sophomore. What he’s doing is very impressive.”

Williams is the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy this season. He’s fifth nationally in Total QBR and second in expected points added. Few have been more dangerous. He has forced 29 missed tackles so far this season, according to Pro Football Focus. No Pac-12 player has more.

The Utes will try and contain him in order to claim a second straight Pac-12 title on Friday when the two square off. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. PT on FOX.
