Former USC QB Matt Barkley is back on an NFL active roster for Week 17 of the 2023 season.

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed Barkley to their active roster off of the New York Giants’ practice squad. Jacksonville starting QB Trevor Lawrence is dealing with a sprained AC joint. Jacksonville backup C.J. Beathard has received playing time when injuries have sidelined Lawrence.

Barkley, 33, is well-traveled, having been in the league since 2013. The Philadelphia Eagles selected Barkley with pick No. 98 in the 2013 NFL Draft.

The Cincinnati Bengals released Barkley with an injury settlement during the 2018 season. He landed with the Buffalo Bills, the last team for which he has played in a regular-season game.

Barkley played in 8 games for the Bills over the period of 2018-2020. His last NFL start was a 2018 contest for Buffalo. Barkley’s last regular-season snaps came in 2020, when he played in 5 games.

The Giants signed Barkley on Halloween this year to the practice squad. He was with the club’s active roster from Nov. 8 to Dec. 4 before being re-signed to the practice squad.
