ESPN's SP+ predicts the score of USC's game against Fresno State
The seventh-ranked USC Trojans (2-0) welcome Fresno State (1-1) to the L.A. Coliseum on Saturday with a shot at starting 3-0 in a full season for the first time since 2017.
Fresno State comes into the matchup on the heels of a dramatic home loss to Oregon State — USC’s Week 4 opponent. The Beavers won on a 2-yard-touchdown run as time expired, topping the Bulldogs 35-32.
The expectation from many is that this weekend’s game won’t be as close.
Bill Connelly’s SP+ sees a Fresno cover, though not a win.
SP+ is predicting a 33-26 USC win over the Bulldogs. As of publication, the Trojans are a 10.5-point favorite over the Bulldogs at FanDuel. The predicted score from SP+ would also have the under — currently set at 74.5 at FanDuel — hitting in a USC game for the first time all year.
Fresno State is 0-2 against the spread so far this season.
The Trojans are 2-0 against it. A 33-point line in the Rice game ended with a 66-14 USC victory. A nine-point line against Stanford turned into a 13-point win. USC smashed the point total in Week 1 and then cleared it by a touchdown in Week 2.
“They’re good everywhere,” coach Lincoln Riley said of Fresno State. “They’re very experienced. They know how to win. They’ve obviously got a staff there of guys that are extremely experienced and know how to get it done at this level.
“I think (they’re) always some of the toughest types of teams because you just don’t identify a ton of weaknesses on tape. And you know you’ve got to be on your game.”
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. PT on FOX.
