ESPN analyst says USC could be Pac-12's best College Football Playoff bet
Even though Oregon sits at No. 6 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings and USC checked in two spots behind, are the Trojans the Pac-12’s best bet to actually get into the four-team field?
ESPN’s Greg McElroy thinks so.
“I’m not sure they’re the best team in the Pac 12,” he said during the rankings reveal Tuesday night, “but if you put together a 12-1 résumé with that one loss being on the road by one to a very good and well-respected Utah team, you beat and knock off a great Oregon team in the Pac 12 championship game, USC — because of the nonconference, too, against Notre Dame — they might have the strongest resume amongst all the Pac 12 teams when it’s all said and done.”
USC (8-1, 6-1 Pac-12) hosts Colorado Friday night at 6:30 p.m. PT on FS1. It would come as a massive surprise if the 34-point favorites lost that game.
No. 12 UCLA gets Arizona this week. If the Bruins make it out of that game with a win, it would set up a crosstown showdown between the two L.A. schools on Nov. 19 with a spot in the Pac-12 title game on the line.
The last time both USC and UCLA played each other with either side having no more than one loss on the record was 2005. (That game turned out pretty well for the Trojans.)
Things are setting up for a memorable finish.
