Caleb Williams would be first QB taken in 2022 or 2023 NFL Draft if eligible, says NFL analyst
Caleb Williams is the talk of college football right now.
The Trojan quarterback will have the chance next season to do something only one other player in the history of the sport has done: win the Heisman Trophy a second time. Williams’ brilliance this past season earned USC its eighth Heisman award. Coach Lincoln Riley has now coached three different Heisman-winning quarterbacks.
The other two were taken first overall in their respective NFL Drafts. And FOX Sports’ Peter Schrager said recently Williams would absolutely be the first quarterback taken in the upcoming draft if he was eligible. Schrager even went so far as to say he would have been the first QB taken in last year’s draft as well.
“He’s not eligible for the draft this year so I did my research. I’m texting everybody, (they’re saying) ‘this guy is so good, he would be the top quarterback in this year’s draft, he would be the top quarterback in last year’s draft,’ he’s not gonna be in the College Football Playoff but we’ll see him next college season with Lincoln Riley and the Trojans,” Schrager said. “Pleasure to watch and he’s got an awesome NFL future ahead.”

In addition to the Heisman Trophy, Williams also claimed the Maxwell and Walter Camp Awards as college football’s most outstanding player this season. He helped turn a 4-8 USC team a year ago into an 11-2 squad that played for a Pac-12 Championship.
Williams had a rough showing in the title game — a 47-24 loss — but battled through a hamstring injury that significantly affected him throughout most of the game. He still managed 363 pass yards and three scores.
On the season, Williams has produced an FBS-leading 37 passing touchdowns. He threw for 4,075 yards while completing 66% of his passes and was the only quarterback in the country to throw at least 400 times and post fewer than five interceptions.
QB guru Tom House recently called Williams the “second coming” of NFL star Patrick Mahomes on the Adam Schefter Podcast, and it’s a comparison that isn’t a new one. Like Mahomes, Williams is a nightmare to bring down for opposing defenders in the open field or in the pocket. He excels throwing off-balance and off-schedule and can pull off a number of different launch angles.
And he’s still a year away from being eligible to enter the NFL Draft.
Williams and USC will face Tulane in the Cotton Bowl to close out the 2022 season. They’ll look to make the College Football Playoff in 2023.
