Caleb Williams to miss Holiday Bowl for USC, per Lincoln Riley
Caleb Williams will not play in the Holiday Bowl.
USC head coach Lincoln Riley revealed the star quarterback’s decision on Monday when he met with reporters via Zoom. Williams still has yet to publicly declare for the 2024 NFL Draft, but it seems to be heading in that direction. Last month, Williams said if he was staying at USC for another year, he’d play in the bowl game.
Without Williams, Riley says USC will use the bowl game as an early audition for Miller Moss and freshman Malachi Nelson.
The Trojans have been linked to several quarterbacks in the transfer portal as well.
If Williams does indeed move on to the NFL — where he’s expected to be one of the first selections in the Draft — USC fans’ final glimpse of him in a Trojans uniform will be in a 38-20 home loss to UCLA.
Losses in five of USC’s last six games turned a once-promising season into a disaster. Williams has had more turnover issues this season than in his first year with USC, but the former Heisman winner was still generally exceptional throughout the year.
He sits seventh nationally in yards through the air (3,633). He’s also top-10 nationally in touchdown throws (30) and yards per pass attempt (9.4). He’s top-15 nationally in completion percentage (68.6%) and Total QBR (82.3).
Williams won the Heisman Trophy in 2022 after leading USC from 4-8 the year prior to 11-3. He threw for 4,537 yards and 42 touchdowns while adding another 10 touchdowns on the ground.
Moss has thrown for 309 yards and a touchdown in four games this season while completing 23 of his 32 passes. Nelson, the former 5-star recruit, is 1-for-3 in his lone appearance this year.
The Holiday Bowl against No. 15 Louisville is scheduled for Dec. 27 at 5 p.m. PT on FOX.
