Caleb Williams responds to biggest challenge to repeating as Heisman winner
Caleb Williams burst out of the gates during his first season at USC. Leading the turnaround of the Trojans under Lincoln Riley, Williams was explosive offensively on his way to capturing the Heisman Trophy.
Now, Williams faces the incredibly different challenge of trying to repeat as the winner of the Heisman, something that Ohio State’s Archie Griffin holds a claim to. According to Williams, the most important part of the journey is simply focusing on the biggest goal week in and week out.
If the goal is going 1-0 every week, Williams believes personal accolades will follow in time:
“Just being yourself, everyone always says it’s hard to do something twice, especially back to back. You’ve gotta focus on the main thing which is winning games,” Williams explained. “You want to go out there every week and be 1-0. You do the math, you go 15-0 and you get to hoist the trophy you really want but also when you do something like that, it makes it a lot easier to go out there and your self-accolades and self-goals are easily accomplished.”
Caleb Williams’ 2023 outlook
During the 2022 season, Williams completed 66.6% of his passes for over 4,500 yards with 42 touchdowns to just 5 interceptions. He added 10 rushing touchdowns for one of the most dynamic seasons in college football history.
While it is hard to repeat those kinds of numbers, Williams remains the betting favorite to take home the Heisman again in 2023. DraftKings currently has Williams at +550 to win the award with Texas QB Quinn Ewers and LSU QB Jayden Daniels at +1200.
