Caleb Williams is not the first elite quarterback to suit up for USC, but he’s having one of the best individual seasons any Trojan passer has ever had.

Friday night against Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game, Williams officially passed Sam Darnold to take over the program’s all-time single-season record for total offense. Darnold’s mark of 4,225 yards was set in 2017 — coincidentally the last time USC won a Pac-12 championship.

Williams entered Friday night’s contest with 4,063 yards in his first 12 games. (That’s tied for the fifth most in the country heading into Championship Week.)

He had 209 yards of offense and two touchdowns in the first half against the Utes.

Of course, USC’s best have been judged by what they won, not how many yards they produced. To that end, Williams still has a chance to make this campaign — his first in Los Angeles — the most memorable of anyone in program history. A 4-8 team a year ago, Williams has helped turn USC into a College Football Playoff contender.

Beating the Utes could secure him the Heisman Trophy and his team a spot in the CFP to chase a national championship.
