Baker Mayfield says Lincoln Riley coaches to outscore teams
Baker Mayfield knows if there’s one thing Lincoln Riley is great at, it’s the offense.
Mayfield is going to be the guest picker on ESPN’s College GameDay on Saturday ahead of this year’s Red River Rivalry game between No. 3 Texas and No. 12 Oklahoma. On Friday, the former OU quarterback made and appearance on The Pat McAfee Show.
Mayfield was asked if Riley only cares about the offense.
“I guess the main point is he tries to score more points than everybody,” said Mayfield. “But, he doesn’t make it easy on himself.”

Mayfield played for Riley while at Oklahoma. Riley was the offensive coordinator in Norman from 2015-2016. Riley then took over for Bob Stoops as the head coach for Mayfield’s final year with the Sooners in 2017. That year, Mayfield won the Heisman Trophy in Riley’s system, but the Sooners blew a second-half lead to Georgia in the College Football Playoff semifinals.
Despite Alex Grinch’s defense nearly blowing the lead against Colorado in Week 5, USC still left Boulder with a 48-41 win. The Trojans, however, were outscored 21-0 over the game’s final 17 minutes.
Grinch and Riley have been heavily criticized since.
The Trojans return to the field on Saturday when they host Arizona at 7:30 p.m. PT on ESPN.
