UCLA heads to Reser Stadium for a top-25 showdown with Oregon State looking to keep the momentum it generated in Week 6 with a 25-17 win over a top-15 Washington State team.

The 18th-ranked Bruins (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12) aren’t led by a high-flying offense this season under Chip Kelly, but rather by a soul-snatching defense. They lead the country in defensive efficiency, giving up fewer yards per play (3.7) than any other team at the FBS. UCLA has rediscovered its identity as a smashmouth team that runs the ball and swarms opposing offensive units without quarter.

The 15th-ranked Beavers (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12) have been doing that for several years under Jonathan Smith. Yet a week ago, in a 52-40 win over Cal, it was quarterback DJ Uiagalelei and the pass game that powered things. DJ U threw for 275 yards and a career-high five touchdowns.

We’ve reached the upside-down with these two teams. A Week 7 clash promises to be an entertaining one.

Score predictions

ESPN’s FPI gives UCLA a 30.4% chance to beat the Beavers.

Bill Connelly’s SP+ projects a 28-27 Oregon State win.

Saturday Out West’s Jon Gold predicted a 24-22 Oregon State win:

A sleeper candidate for game of the week in a weekend chock full of tasty matchups, I can’t wait to see what UCLA does to the Oregon State offense after drilling Washington State, 25-17, on Saturday. Likewise, I’m excited to see how the Oregon State offense looks after its best performance of the year.

As I wrote Thursday, this game comes before weak schedules for both teams until late November.

Saturday Out West’s Derek Peterson picked UCLA:

UCLA completely manhandled the team Oregon State trailed 35-14 going into the fourth a few weeks ago. I get the home-versus-road distinction there, but I don’t think UCLA’s defense is being truly appreciated yet for how excellent it is. I think they make a few plays on DJ Uiagalelei in a game that gets settled on a few plays.
