UCLA has a top-10 spot in the AP poll. It has the inside track to the Pac-12 title game. The door to the College Football Playoff isn’t completely locked at this point either. And it welcomes No. 8 USC to the Rose Bowl next Saturday for a colossal crosstown showdown.

This week against an Arizona team that can score with anyone but yields points to everyone feels like the quintessential trap game.

The Bruins (8-1, 5-1 Pac-12) are off to their best start since 2005. Quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson is making smart decisions with the football. The ground game is operating at the top of its game, even without its top runner. The Bruins are averaging a conference-leading 242.3 yards a game — third among Power Five teams — and a conference-leading 6.3 yards a carry.

Arizona is fourth-worst among all FBS teams in points per game given up and yards per play allowed.

The Wildcats are also among the FBS leaders in explosive plays. Quarterback Jayden de Laura is second only to Michael Penix Jr. in passing yards and he’s thrown for 22 touchdowns. The Wildcats can and have made things interesting for others.

UCLA coach Chip Kelly knows the Bruins have to focus on what they can control. No worrying about the CFP or its ranking, no looking ahead to USC, no dismissing the Wildcats.

“If you don’t win your next four games, then it doesn’t matter,” Kelly said. “We want to be in the conversation, but the only way you can stay in the conversation is to continue to prepare well and play well on Saturdays. So that’s kind of what we can control.”

We’ll see how they fare this Saturday.

Expert predictions

ESPN’s FPI gives the Bruins an 88.3% chance of beating the Wildcats.

Bill Connelly’s SP+ is calling for a 49-21 UCLA win.

All Bruins’ Sam Connon picked UCLA to win 45-27:

Arizona may add some points late when the Bruins resort to their prevent defense – and they may get points on a few big plays of their own early one – but all it will take is two or three stops to bury the Wildcats on Saturday night.

Arizona Desert Swarm’s Brian J. Pedersen picked UCLA to win 49-34:

Thankfully, there’s no cold, wind or rain in the forecast in Pasadena, so Arizona’s offense should be back to the form that has seen it produce one of the best pass attacks in the country. Still, without the ability to get stops, this is going to be another case of the UA being just good enough to lose by a couple of scores.
