UCLA lands commitment from local 2023 blue-chip safety
No game on Saturday, but UCLA fans got something to cheer about heading into the weekend all the same.
Late Friday night, Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco safety RJ Jones announced his verbal commitment to UCLA. “I’m staying home,” wrote the 4-star defensive back.

Jones was a Cal commit for several months until the UCLA offer came in and forced him to reconsider. He joined the Bears’ class in February but left it in mid-August, a few weeks after UCLA extended a scholarship offer.
A 6-foot-1, 195-pound safety, Jones rates as a 4-star in the industry-generated 247 Composite. He’s the 36th-ranked safety in the class and the 390th overall prospect.
“I like the defense overall and I think it’s a great fit for me,” Jones told 247Sports’ Greg Biggins. “That’s something both Coach (Chip) Kelly and Coach (Brian) Norwood hammered home to me, was how well I’ll fit in with what they want to do, and I can see it as well.”
