Dorian Thompson-Robinson participated fully in UCLA’s bowl practice on Friday, according to reports from local media in attendance, but the Bruins’ fifth-year quarterback remained non-committal when asked about whether he plans to play in the bowl game against Pittsburgh on Dec. 30.

“I think it’s still being determined,” Thompson-Robinson said. “I just love being out here with my guys, love playing football, so just taking every opportunity as they come.”

The Bruins (9-3) are seeking a 10th win in a single season for what would be just the 10th time in school history. Thompson-Robinson is also presented with the opportunity to play in his first bowl game as a Bruin.

Last year’s team earned a berth in the Holiday Bowl, but the game was canceled the day of because of a COVID outbreak in the Bruins’ locker room.

“As of right now, it’s leaning more towards playing,” Thompson-Robinson said when pressed.

DTR has been the team’s unquestioned leader this year, turning in his best season as a Bruin. He has thrown for 2,883 yards and 25 touchdowns while rushing for another 631 yards and 11 scores. He ranks fifth among all Pac-12 quarterbacks this season in yards per play this season and ended the regular season 11th nationally in QBR.

If Thompson-Robinson, who has NFL Draft aspirations, were to sit out the game against Pitt, it would set up a backup-on-backup situation in the bowl.

Pittsburgh quarterback Kedon Slovis isn’t expected to play after announcing his intention to transfer. The Panthers will also be without their unanimous All-American defensive lineman, Calijah Kancey, who will miss the game because of an injury.

This year’s Sun Bowl is set for an 11 a.m. PT kickoff (CBS) on Friday, Dec. 30.
