Chip Kelly isn't concerned about job security following blowout loss to Cal
Chip Kelly, asked to evaluate his coaching performance this season, said he felt UCLA did not do what it needed to do.
The Bruins slipped to 7-5 at home Saturday night with a 33-7 loss to Cal. To close out the regular season, UCLA lost three of its last four games. Yes, UCLA hammered USC at the Coliseum just days after reports emerged that suggested Kelly’s job was in jeopardy, but that big win was followed up with an equally damaging loss.
“In phases, we’ve played really, really well. We’ve got to put it together,” Kelly said.
Kelly said after the USC game he had the backing of UCLA’s administration. Reports that he was “likely” to be fired were deemed inappropriate and inaccurate. Sitting at the dais following a loss to Cal a week later, Kelly was asked if he was worried the dynamic between himself and athletic director Martin Jarmond may have changed.
“I don’t worry about that. I don’t worry about the dynamic,” Kelly said. “I know this team’s 24-13 in the last three years and they compete every single day.
“We understand where we are and we understand that we have to win games. I get that. That’s part of the deal. But I don’t think about those things, I don’t worry about those things. That’s never been my M.O.”
UCLA turned the football over four times in the loss to Cal. It gave up a 100-yard kickoff return touchdown immediately after taking its first lead of the game in the second quarter, then it gave up a touchdown with 10 seconds to play in the half to fall into a 20-7 halftime hole.
Ethan Garbers started at quarterback, but he was knocked out of the game at the end of the Bruins’ first drive. Dante Moore replaced him and was picked off on the very next play. Moore finished the game with 266 yards through the air, but he was intercepted twice and fumbled the ball. The fumble led directly to the last-minute touchdown from Cal going into the half.
Kelly admitted he thought about making a quarterback change, but decided against it. When pressed on why, he said sharply he “just didn’t think it was the right thing to do.”
UCLA has one game left this season. The Bruins are bowl-eligible, but they’re likely headed to a second-rate game. Rumors will continue to swirl about everyone’s commitment.
“It was a tough season,” Kelly said. “I told the players in the locker room they’ve got one more opportunity to get this taste out of their mouths.”
