Chip Kelly addressed the presence of one notable visitor at UCLA’s recent practice, but he was quick to put to bed any speculation about a new addition to the Bruins’ coaching staff.

While speaking with the media, Kelly was asked about spotting former Stanford head coach David Shaw at practice. Kelly pointed out Shaw’s son — Carter — is No. 7 on UCLA’s team and said David came “to watch his son practice.”

The inevitable question came about any potential role for Shaw at UCLA, but Kelly said that is not happening. Shaw’s role is simply “UCLA dad” per Kelly with the former coach of the Cardinal simply wanting “to watch his kids play” at this point.

“David’s going to be there,” said Kelly referring to an area at practice. “And I think if you ask him — and I’m not being sarcastic — he’s just really proud to be a UCLA dad. And that’s his role is to just be the father of Carter and come watch his kid play.

“He’s got another son that’s going to be playing high school ball so he’s kind of going to be going back and forth between that. I think he’s going to be doing some work for the NFL Network. David’s role is UCLA dad and very very close friend of mine, but he’s not doing anything (for us). He wants to watch his kids play, so I’m happy to have a UCLA dad like that on our side.”

David Shaw served as the head coach of Stanford from 2011-22, winning 3 Pac-12 titles, 4 Pac-12 Coach of the Year Awards and compiling a 96-54 overall record. As for Carter Shaw, he’s a freshman wide receiver for the Bruins and a summer enrollee for the program.
