Chip Kelly and the UCLA Bruins lost their top 2023 signee to the transfer portal last week.

Freshman quarterback Dante Moore announced plans to enter the portal and leave the program after spending just a year in it. His comments to 247Sports about why were perhaps even more damning to a Bruins team that has faced calls from the fanbase for weeks to dismiss the head coach.

When Kelly met with reporters for the LA Bowl news conference on Sunday, he said he had not seen Moore’s remarks to 247Sports and therefore he had no comment.

Kelly did say the two talked before Moore made his decision public, though.

“We had a good conversation,” Kelly said. “We wish him well. If we can assist him in any way where he’s heading next. That’s what our job is.”

Moore told 247Sports Matt Zenitz that development and being at a place that “loves” college football was most important to him as he searches for his next school.

“For these next upcoming years, I just want to go to a place where I can get developed,” Moore told 247Sports. “That’s the main thing is really development, making sure you’re bettering yourself every day and having a staff around you that’s going to help develop you. So I’d say the biggest things are going to a place where I can get developed and continue to love and have fun playing football and be around a place that loves college football and be around great athletes.”

The Michigan native was originally committed to play for Oregon before flipping that pledge late in the process to UCLA. Moore started five games throughout the season, but repeated interception issues led UCLA back to Ethan Garbers.

Moore ended the year with 1,610 yards, 11 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in nine appearances. He’s viewed as one of the best quarterbacks in the portal right now, and he’ll be eligible to play right away for his next team.

UCLA, meanwhile, will be business as usual approaching its bowl game. Kelly told reporters Ethan Garbers is expected to be available.

The LA Bowl is set to take place on Saturday, Dec. 16, at 4:30 p.m. PT (ABC).
