Stanford earns commitment from 4-star 2023 edge rusher
In perhaps the biggest win of the class so far, Stanford landed a verbal commitment from Hunter Clegg, a top-200 national recruit, on Monday.
A 6-foot-4, 235-pound edge rusher from American Fork (Utah), Clegg announced his commitment via social media. He chose the Cardinal over interest from BYU, Utah, Baylor, and USC among others.
Committed! Thank you to all of the coaches that recruited me. It was a tough decision, but Stanford is home! @StanfordFball @CoachDavidShaw @CoachL_Anderson @AlphaRecruits15 @alpha_lbu @cavemanfootball pic.twitter.com/mw7pBE8vtz

Clegg rates as a 4-star in the industry-generated 247 Composite. He’s the third-ranked recruit from the state of Utah and the No. 23 edge rusher in his class. Overall, Clegg ranks as the 189th-best 2023 prospect. He took an official visit to BYU on June 1 and then to Utah a week later. Stanford got the last look; he was in Palo Alto the last recruiting weekend of June for an official and clearly was sold on what he saw.
As a junior last fall, Clegg registered nine tackles for loss and five sacks for American Fork. Cooper Petagna, 247Sports’ national recruiting analyst, had this to say on his game:
Exhibits good knee bend and hip flexibility in and out of his stance. Possesses a good first step off the line of scrimmage with excellent initial quickness and suddenness at the point of attack. Moves efficiently with little to no wasted motion in his pass-rush and setup. Wins consistently with speed and quickness but flashes the ability to go speed to power. Displays active hands at the point of attack. Demonstrates good burst to close and backside pursuit ability. Plays with excellent play speed and motor. Appears to have adequate to above average play strength in playing the run.
Active perimeter pass-rusher that wins consistently off the line of scrimmage with speed and quickness but also offers pass-rushing upside with his motor. Shows the ability to play with his hand in the ground but scheme projection will be dependent on size and growth potential. Projects as a 3-4 edge rusher at the next level with the ability to develop into an all-conference prospect with a floor of a multi-year starter at a Power Five program. Will add value on multiple special teams units.
His verbal pledge gives Stanford its 11th known commitment for the 2023 cycle and brings the class ranking up from 51st nationally to 43rd. You can view Clegg’s highlight tape below, via Hudl:
