Stanford’s running back room got better this week.

The Cardinal is set to add a former blue-chip running back from the transfer portal. Tennessee tailback Justin Williams-Thomas announced on social media Tuesday evening he has committed to Stanford.

Williams-Thomas spent just one season on Rocky Top before hitting the transfer portal.

The rising sophomore runner spent his debut season fourth on the depth chart behind Jabari Small, Jaylen Wright, and fellow freshman Dylan Sampson. He battled injuries in the preseason that lingered and ultimately influenced his standing in the pecking order during the year.

A 6-foot, 210-pound tailback, Williams-Thomas closed out his freshman season with 11 carries for 37 yards in three appearances. With only three games played, he was able to preserve the season as a redshirt year, giving him four years of eligibility at Stanford.

He was a top-300 recruit out of the 2022 class and ranked as the 22nd-best running back in the country as a high school prospect. As a senior, Williams-Thomas finished with 2,116 all-purpose yards, including 1,896 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. That was after a 16-touchdown campaign as a junior.

Stanford announced his signing Wednesday afternoon, noting that he is the first undergraduate transfer in program history to enroll mid-year.
