Back in July, Stanford beat out Utah, USC, BYU, Alabama, and Ohio State for a verbal commitment from Walker Lyons, a 4-star tight end from Folsom (Calif.) and a top-150 prospect in the Class of 2023.

With news that Stanford head coach David Shaw is stepping down, Lyons re-opened his recruitment on Monday. Lyons said Stanford will remain an option for him, but he’s postponing his signing until February to re-evaluate.

Lyons has already taken official visits to Utah (June 10) and USC (June 16).

Utah got Lyons on campus during the season as well, hosting him when USC came to town on Oct. 15. That day featured one of the most thrilling games of the entire Pac-12 season, and it saw Utah tight end Dalton Kincaid catch 16 balls for 234 yards and a touchdown. Expect both the Utes and Trojans to be in the mix as he re-evaluates his options.

According to 247Sports, Lyons will serve an LDS mission in Norway beginning late January and enroll at the school he signs with in the fall of 2024.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound tight end ranks as the fifth-best at his position in the class. He’s also the 10th-ranked recruit from the state of California and 115th overall, according to the industry-generated 247 Composite. He had 42 receptions for 646 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior last fall.
