Pac-12 presidents on Friday received a notable update on the conference’s long-awaited television contract.

Ross Dellenger of Sports Illustrated reported that this update was described as “accelerated” progress on a TV deal. While only a general framework was revealed, including significant linear concepts, a more substantive framework is expected by football media day on July 21.

That means that any expansion, such as with San Diego State, will be put off until after a deal is made. The Aztecs must give the Mountain West Conference formal notice of withdrawal by Friday to avoid a doubling of the $17 million exit fee for the 2024 season.

Several schools, including those in the Pac-12 such as Colorado, Arizona and Arizona State are considering their options as the exact details of the new media rights deal could swing realignment decisions.

The Pac-12 media rights deal has been discussed as in the works in varying forms  — streaming, linear and combinations — since the Big 12 jumped ahead of the Pac-12 and agreed to a 6-year extensions to its current deal with Fox and ESPN late last year.

Earlier last year, the B1G landed a landmark deal with 3 networks, CBS, NBC and FOX.
