Pac-12 president sought larger Big 12 merger at expense of 2 programs, per report
One Pac-12 president reportedly sought a large-scale merger of the remaining Pac-12 teams with the Big 12 prior to Friday’s splinter. However, two programs were reportedly not included in that potential plan.
According to college football insider Brett McMurphy, a Pac-12 president contacted a Big 12 president after one meeting with George Kliavkoff last week. That contact included the Pac-12 president asking if the Big 12 could take the remaining 9 teams “except for Oregon State and Washington State.”
How committed was Pac-12 to staying together? Following last Tuesday’s meeting w/commish George Kliavkoff, a Pac-12 president contacted a Big 12 president & asked if Big 12 “could take all (9) of us, except for Oregon State & Washington State?” source told @ActionNetworkHQ

McMurphy did not indicate which president it was, but speculation is bound to swirl from that report. And as we now know, that reported plan was unsuccessful with Oregon and Washington heading to the Big Ten and a trio of Arizona, Arizona State and Utah eventually winding up in the Big 12.
Still, that type of report is wild, to say the least. As things currently stand, the final four teams in the Pac-12 are Cal, Oregon State, Stanford and Washington State. It remains to be seen what becomes of that group, but the old Pac-12 is certainly a thing of the past.
