Notre Dame had a frustrating afternoon against Cal on Saturday.

The Fighting Irish gained just 118 yards and scored only seven points in the first half against the Golden Bears. The first four possessions of the game all ended in punts after three plays. The fifth possession ended in a fumble after two plays. The Irish also committed four false start penalties — all on 3rd down.

During the first quarter, NBC showed a clip of offensive coordinator Tommy Rees appearing to tear into Notre Dame quarterback Drew Pyne on the sideline phone.

“Do your F—ing job,” Rees appeared to say on video.

Here’s the clip:

In the first half, Pyne completed 7-of-12 passes for 57 yards. He made the start Saturday because of a season-ending injury to starter Tyler Buchner. After the game, Pyne told reporters he didn’t have an issue with Rees’ approach.

“I texted him this Sunday and said I want you to be very hard on me,” Pyne said. “That’s the standard he holds me to and that’s what I asked for, and I respond well to hard coaching.”

Notre Dame won the game 24-17 — its first victory of the season — as Pyne finished 17-for-23 for 150 yards and two scores.
