The Mountain West Conference has seen its profile rise in recent days as the Pac-12 Conference has reached a crossroads as programs around the league have exited for the B1G and Big 12.

The Mountain West has long been rumored as a destination for some of the so-called Pac-4 remaining teams, such as Oregon State or Washington State. The league came out with a statement to clarify its stance amid realignment and movement around the country.

It’s “exploring all opportunities to strengthen the league, including through the addition of new member schools.”

“… We are strong in who we are and proud of the exceptional experience we provide the student-athletes of the Mountain West Conference,” the statement read.

Even before the Pac-12 moves of the last week, San Diego State earlier in the summer initially informed the Mountain West of its intention to leave before it decided to return. That move was seen as a sign of strength for the league as the Aztecs are the conference power in basketball and earlier this year made the national championship game before it lost to UConn.

In football, SDSU have gone at least .500 for 13 consecutive seasons, including winning records 12 of those years.
