Gold: Ranking all 36 Pac-12 nonconference games
Last year, Oregon and Georgia squared off in a nonconference melee that became one of the most lop-sided matchups between two top-15 teams ever.
A 49-3 Bulldogs win made quite clear the pecking order right from the start.
There aren’t any non-conference matchups of that scale this year, but the debuts of Deion Sanders — against the defending national runner-up TCU Horned Frogs — as well as Kenny Dillingham and Troy Taylor should make for good viewing. Plus, Utah gives it a go with Florida once more, only on its home turf.
Here’s my ranking of all 36 nonconference games for the Pac-12…
Tier 6: Is there anything on HGTV?
36) Cal vs. Idaho, Week 3
Bears! Vandals! Perhaps a preview of some exciting future Big Sky action?
35) UCLA vs. NC Central, Week 3
For the second straight year, the Bruins will take on an HBCU. Last year, UCLA beat Alabama State, 45-7. Not exactly appointment TV.
34) Washington State vs. Northern Colorado, Week 3
The FCS Bears moved on from long-time NFL wide receiver and short-term head coach Ed McCaffrey after two 3-8 seasons, so there is some intrigue. But minimal.
33) Utah vs. Weber State, Week 3
The two Beehive State squads have squared off four times, with Utah winning all four, including a 70-7 win in 2013 in their last matchup. Pass.
32) Oregon State vs. UC Davis, Week 2
The Beavers should have little trouble with the Aggies, who’ve pulled off four wins over FBS schools in their history.
31) Oregon vs. Portland State, Week 1
The Ducks and Vikings have played 5 times, with Oregon winning by more than 40 points on average. Oregon won 62-14 in their last meeting.
30) Arizona vs. Northern Arizona, Week 1
Two years ago, the Lumberjacks won their first game over their southern rivals since 1932, just their second win over the Wildcats in history. But that was a 1-11 Arizona team. It won’t happen again.
29) Arizona vs. UTEP, Week 3
Two week after the Lumberjacks come the Miners. Excited for their Week 2 matchup against the Blacksmiths.
28) Washington vs. Tulsa, Week 2
The Golden Hurricanes are coming off a 5-8 season and an 8th-place finish in the AAC. They’ll put up a fight, but a small one.
27) Cal at North Texas, Week 1
The Mean Green are in a state of change while the Bears are in a state of stasis. With former Washington State offensive coordinator taking over North Texas, plus a move to the AAC, things are going to be interesting. But not too interesting.
Tier 5: If there’s nothing else on…
26) Stanford vs. Sac State, Week 2
OK, Troy Taylor against his former team? It’s not Alabama vs. Georgia, but it will do.
25) Arizona State vs. Southern Utah, Week 1
The Kenny Dillingham Era should start with a bang against the Thunderbirds.
24) Stanford at Hawaii, Week 1
The Troy Taylor Era should start with a bang against the Warriors. The Cardinal get the nod over the Sun Devils, if only because Hawaii is more fun than Southern Utah.
23) Oregon vs. Hawaii, Week 3
The Warriors again? Bleh. But the Ducks are always worth checking out for a few minutes.
22) Cal vs. Auburn, Week 2
Talk about a culture clash. Hugh Freeze and the Tigers will head west to Berkeley for the first matchup between the two programs. Freeze will just try to avoid a contact high. A matchup between two poor passing games might not be too thrilling.
21) Washington State at Colorado State, Week 1
The Cougars kick off what will be a pivotal season for them against a potential future Mountain West rival. The Rams shouldn’t put up too much of a fight — they’ve won just 14 games since the start of 2018.
20) USC vs. Nevada, Week 1
The Trojans and Wolf Pack haven’t played since 1929, a 66-0 USC win that capped off 5 games in 10 years. The combined score? 164-0.
19) UCLA vs. Coastal Carolina, Week 1
It is slightly interesting to see the Bruins take on Tim Beck, the former Nebraska, Ohio State, Texas and North Carolina State offensive coordinator in his first collegiate head coaching gig. It is very interesting to see Dante Moore take his first snaps against a 3-time reining bowl squad.
Tier 4: Now you’ve got my attention
18) Stanford vs. Notre Dame, Week 13
One of the game’s special rivalries, Stanford currently holds the Legends Trophy after an 16-14 upset of the Irish last year. By Week 13, we’ll have a full sense of the Troy Taylor experiment.
17) Oregon State at San Jose State, Week 1
The Beavers are America’s Team this year after being lost in the realignment shuffle. A big win in Week 1 will be set Jonathan Smith and Co. on a positive course.
16) UCLA at San Diego State, Week 2
The Aztecs are just 1-21-1 against the Bruins, but that win came in their last matchup in 2019. UCLA should get a good look at SDSU’s Snapdragon Stadium.
15) Arizona State vs. Fresno State, Week 3
If Jake Haener was still under center for the Bulldogs, this game will be higher on the list. We should have a pretty good feel for Kenny Dillingham by Week 3.
14) Oregon at Texas Tech, Week 2
The Ducks premier non-con matchup might be a step down from last years season opener with Georgia, but Oregon will take that. Anything to avoid another 49-3 beatdown.
13) Arizona State vs. Oklahoma State, Week 2
A rematch of last years OSU win, only minus Spencer Sanders. This early matchup will put some hair on Kenny Dillingham’s chest.
12) Oregon State vs. San Diego State, Week 3
With both programs reeling from the decimation of the PAC-12, call this the Forsaken Few Bowl. This could prove a tough early test for the playoff-minded Beavers.
Tier 3: Penciling it in
11) Washington vs. Boise State, Week 1
The Chris Petersen Bowl should be a sneaky good game and should maybe be higher on the list. If Michael Penix Jr. is hampered in any way, the Huskies better watch out.
10) Arizona at Mississippi State, Week 2
Will Rogers torched the Cats last season. What does the MSU star QB have in store for an encore?
9) Washington State vs. Wisconsin, Week 2
The Cougars scored a surprise win in Madison last year, but new head coach Luke Fickell brings a terrific resume from Cincinnati.
8) USC vs. San Jose State, Week 0
An early test against a good quarterback in Chevan Cordeiro will good for USC.
7) Utah at Baylor, Week 2
The Utes might have the toughest combined two weeks in all of college football, with a tough road trip at the Bears, following a season opener against Florida at home.
6) Colorado vs. Colorado State, Week 3
You would think the novelty would wear off in Week 3, but a rivalry game against the in-state Rams gives yet another reason to watch the Coach Prime show.
5) Washington at Michigan State, Week 3
The Huskies pulled off a big early home win over the Spartans last year, fueling a massive turnaround. Can MSU muster up something special at home this time around?
Tier 2: Must-see TV
4) USC at Notre Dame, Week 7
Always one of the great non-con games of the year, especially when it happens late in the year. The battle for the Jeweled Shileleagh in Week 7 will be an interesting wrench in the long- standing rivalry.
3) Utah vs. Florida, Week 1
If not for the carnival act that’s happening in Colorado, Utah’s rematch with Florida would take top billing. The youths left the swamp empty-handed last year, but rebounded to win their second straight Pac-12 title. Florida, meanwhile, collapsed in their shutout Las Vegas Bowl loss to OSU and wants to get off to a good start. All eyes will be in Cam Rising’s knees, of course.
2) Colorado vs. Nebraska, Week 2
It won’t have quite the interest level as Deion Sanders’ Colorado kickoff in Week 1, but you better believe Boulder will be bouncing in his first home game. Folsom Field better have some extra staff on hand. It could get crazy.
Tier 1: Cancel the wedding
1) Colorado at TCU, Week 1
Coach Prime’s debut with Colorado against the reigning national runner-up? Yeah, sorry babe, can we push it to October? There might not be a more intriguing non-conference game in the country than this freak show. A novelty Buffaloes squad. A who-knows-what Horned Frogs team. Yeah, don’t touch the remote.
