ESPN's FPI updates Pac-12 title odds, Playoff chances following Week 9
ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI) now lists Oregon as the overwhelming favorite to win the Pac-12 and as one of the best four teams in college football.
Ahead of Tuesday’s first College Football Playoff rankings reveal, FPI bumped the Ducks up to No. 4 in its latest rankings. Oregon went into Salt Lake City this weekend and dominated a ranked Utah squad from start to finish.
The 35-6 win was enough to bump Oregon up six spots in the predictive index. It now sits as the only top-10 team from the Pac-12 in the model’s rankings. Washington dropped once again, down to No. 14. USC remained at No. 17 after barely escaping Cal with a win. Oregon State moved up one spot to No. 18 despite losing by three on the road to Arizona.
That loss for the Beavers really cut into their Pac-12 title hopes. According to FPI, their percentage chance to win the league dropped from 10.7% a week ago to just 3.3% now.
FPI views Washington and USC as the only legitimate threats to Oregon in the league’s title picture at the moment.
Here is the updated Pac-12 outlook from FPI:
- Oregon — 52.0% to win the Pac-12 conference championship (33.6% last week)
- Washington — 28.7%
- USC — 12.1%
- Oregon State — 3.3%
- Utah — 2.3%
- Arizona — 0.9%
- UCLA — 0.8%
- Cal — 0.0%
- Washington State — 0.0%
- Colorado — 0.0%
- Arizona State — 0.0%
- Stanford — 0.0%
And even though Washington remains unbeaten with a head-to-head win over the Ducks, FPI views Oregon as the Pac-12’s best chance to get into the CFP.
Washington has a 20.9% to make the Playoff, according to FPI. Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, and Oregon all have better odds, despite all of them having a loss each.
Since beating Oregon 36-33 at home on Oct. 14, Washington has looked shaky. It beat Arizona State 15-7 while failing to score an offensive touchdown. In Week 9, it beat Stanford 42-33 on the road in a game where Michael Penix Jr. threw four touchdown passes but UW just never quite separated.
After the Oregon win, FPI gave Washington a 39.9% chance to make the playoffs
Here are the updated CFP odds for each team:
- Oregon — 27.6%
- Washington — 20.9%
- USC — 0.3%
- Oregon State — 0.1%
- Utah — 0.1%
