ESPN executive responds to details of Pac-12 media rights negotiations
The details of Pac-12 media rights negotiations have come into focus in recent days, and now an ESPN executive has come out with the company’s perspective on the issue.
Burke Magnus, president of content for ESPN, spoke with Richard Deitsch of The Athletic about the issue, and was asked if reporting on the topic was accurate. The LA Times earlier this week reported that Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff brought the schools an ESPN offer of $30 million per school annually for all of their rights.

An analysis by the league found that it would be in the mid-$30-million range, and after some negotiations, the 2 sides would settle around $35 million. However, a Pac-12 professor saw the valuation at $50 million, and the deal didn’t progress.
“Directionally, yeah, that’s fair to say,” Magnus said. “I think the order was reversed. Our final offer, which was rejected, was never really countered back. We went in another direction, as has been documented. Regardless, we thought we made a fair, disciplined and marketplace-informed offer, and we couldn’t get there with them at that time.”
