After just one season with the program, Oregon State is losing a piece of its quarterback room.

According to BeaverBlitz’s Carter Bahns, freshman quarterback Sam Vidlak has put his name into the transfer portal.

An Oregon native, Vidlak was the third-highest-rated recruit from the 2021 signing class for head coach Jonathan Smith. He threw just 3 pass attempts in his first year on campus, though. With two years left on starter Chance Nolan’s eligibility clock and Tristan Gebbia still around, Vidlak appeared to be down on the depth chart.

Nolan threw for 2,677 yards and 19 touchdowns this season, which wrapped Saturday in LA, while completing 64% of his passes. The Beavers went 7-5 in the regular season before a 24-13 bowl loss to Utah State, but earned wins against USC, Washington, and eventual Pac-12 champ Utah.

A former 3-star, Vidlak was the 734th overall prospect in the 2021 class and held offers to Montana, Northern Arizona, and Yale.

Now he’ll look for a new home.
