Oregon State AD Scott Barnes is not thrilled about the latest round of realignment moves.

On Friday, news broke that Oregon and Washington are headed to the Big Ten. Arizona is also off to the Big 12 with Arizona State and Utah reportedly awaiting a final vote on Big 12 membership.

According to Nick Daschel with The Oregonian, Barnes admitted to being “furious” about the programs leaving the Pac-12. Barnes explained he’s furious because of the position it leaves Oregon State and Beaver student-athletes moving forward:

“I’m furious because it puts this university in harm’s way and our student-athletes in harm’s way,” said Barnes. “There’s some damage done that we’re going to have to mitigate.”

As for the long-reported on Pac-12 media rights deal, Barnes claimed Friday that the league was “hours away” from a deal for the 9 remaining teams. Unfortunately, last-minute decisions flipped the script with 5 teams now in the process of leaving the league.

“We were literally hours away from a deal that everybody could embrace,” Barnes said…

“I’ve never seen so many last-minute decisions and twists and turns as I’ve seen through this process. Conference realignment just doesn’t make sense anymore. What this enterprise was built on was regionality and rivalries. That is gone. That is leaving the Pac-12. Some of the most special pieces about our model is regionality of competition and rivalries. Those things are forgotten.”

Regardless of what happened along the way, Oregon State is about to be one of four remaining Pac-12 programs committed for 2024. Stanford, Cal and Washington State are the others, and it remains to be seen if those schools can stay united at this point in the game.
