Michigan State is nearing the end of its head coaching search, according to a report.

The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach reported that Oregon State’s Jonathan Smith is the “top target” for the job. Auerbach also reports that while nothing has been finalized, the search is “in its final stages” and is expected to be complete before the end of the weekend.

Smith has been linked to the Michigan State vacancy for the past few weeks. Earlier this week, he acknowledged in an interview with John Canzano that his agent has been tasked with “finding out what is out there.” Here’s the full quote from Smith’s interview with Canzano:

“I’m not trying to be sarcastic here. I’ve got an agent that’s got a job,” Smith said. “He best be finding out what is out there and people calling. That’s how that works. I can tell you from his side he best be working just because I’m paying him so much. They get a percentage and I’m making a couple million bucks. I’m not trying to be sarcastic. Any coach, they’re aware of what’s potentially out there if their agent is doing their job. I’m not trying to dodge the question. I’m trying to be truthful.”

Smith is in his 6th season at Oregon State. A former player for the Beavers, he has turned the program into a consistent winner during his tenure. Oregon State won 10 games a year ago and is 8-3 this season entering a Week 13 meeting with Oregon.

Oregon State athletic director Scott Barnes said earlier this week that he was in talks with Smith on a contract extension and an increased assistant coach salary pool.

Both Michigan State and Oregon State play on Friday night, so an official announcement could theoretically come as early as Saturday if Smith and the Spartans are able to reach an agreement.
