DJ Uiagalelei and the Oregon State Beavers dropped a 50-burger on Cal Saturday night on the road.

Washington hit Cal for 59 points two weeks ago, but that game came in Seattle. With a 52-40 win over Cal at California Memorial Stadium, the Beavers scored more points on the Bears than any visiting opponent has in Berkeley since 2016. Uiagalelei threw a career-high-tying five touchdown passes to lead the effort.

With the victory, the 15th-ranked Beavers moved to 5-1 on the season. It’s the best start to a year through six games since 2013.

Against Cal, Oregon State found itself trailing 17-14 midway through the second quarter. Cal’s Isaiah Ifanse brought in a 9-yard touchdown reception and then ran in a score from 1 yard out on Cal’s ensuing drive to give the Golden Bears a lead.

Oregon State then scored 14 unanswered to recapture its lead. Uiagalelei, who missed only six of his 25 passes all evening, completed balls to nine different Beaver players.

Anthony Gould caught seven of those passes for 117 yards. Jack Velling led the group with three receiving touchdowns. Silas Bolden had 34 receiving yards, a score, and 109 kickoff return yards.

Damien Martinez ran for 89 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Deshaun Fenwick added 76 yards on 15 carries.

Cal never let itself fully fall out of the game, though. They went into the fourth quarter trailing by only three points, 35-32.

The quarterback spot changed hands again as Fernando Mendoza took over for Sam Jackson V. The redshirt freshman completed 21 of his 32 passes for 207 yards, two touchdowns, and a pick.

That interception was costly, though. It was one of two fourth-quarter turnovers for the Bears, and it came right after the previous drive ended with a fumble. Oregon State scored a touchdown off the fumble, then it ran a 16-play, 61-yard, nine-minute field goal drive off the interception to ice the game.

Oregon State (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12) welcomes UCLA to Reser Stadium next Saturday for what should be a top-25 matchup.

Cal (3-3, 1-2 Pac-12) will head to Salt Lake City to face Utah.
